Ocean Trailblazers: Explorations, discoveries, and technologies of the deep

About this event

The World Ocean is our planet’s largest ecosystem, it stabilizes climate, stores carbon, nurtures unimaginable biodiversity, and directly supports human well-being through food and energy resources. As important as the ocean, much of it remains underexplored. Join us online for this month’s Earth Lecture Series, moderated by the Climate School's Founding Dean, Alex Halliday, in conversation with two of Columbia University’s most well-informed ocean explorers, Sonya Dyrhman and Maya Tolstoy.

The Speakers:

Sonya Dyhrman is a professor of earth and environmental sciences at Columbia University and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Maya Tolstoy is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in New York. She is a marine geophysicist specializing in seafloor earthquakes and volcanoes.

The Moderator:

Alex Halliday is the Founding Dean of the Columbia Climate School and Director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute.

About Us:

The Earth Institute at Columbia University is the world leader in interdisciplinary climate and sustainability research, policy and teaching. Under the directorship of pioneering geochemist Alex Halliday, PhD the Earth Institute brings together a community of earth and environmental scientists, economists, lawyers, public health specialists and business and policy experts to seek solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges.
